Description:

The Alternatives Program provides help to frail and disabled residents of Salt Lake County 18 years and older who require help to continue living independently at home. Services may include case management assessment, home health care, homemaking, emergency systems, respite for stressed caregivers, as well as other needed services.

Volunteer Opportunities: The variety of opportunities available depends on current client needs. These needs are identified by the case manager initially, and may be added to as the volunteer gets to know their client better. All Alternatives volunteers provide much appreciated social contact, as well as fulfilling a variety of needs that otherwise might not be met through the program. If the volunteer has a car and is willing to transport their client, volunteering may include activities such as running errands, taking clients to appointments, helping homebound seniors get out of the house, shopping, visiting, etc. If the volunteer does not choose to drive their client, activities may include such things as visiting and talking, helping with jobs around the house, cooking, organizing, light yard and house work, helping with phone calls, watching videos, reading, and scrap booking, among other things.

Requirements:

  • 18 years or older (exceptions have been made for mature younger volunteers)
  • Pass a background check
  • If providing transportation:
    • Current Utah Class 'D' Drivers License
    • Personal Car Insurance as required by the State of Utah
    • Reliable vehicle with current registration and inspection
    • Clean driving record
    • Completion of Defensive Driving Course (Class provided through Salt Lake County free of charge)

Time Commitment: Variable - 2 hours per week recommended (minimum)

Training & Support: The Alternatives Program provides orientation on a personal basis dependent on what duty(s) will be performed. On site training is provided. Ongoing support is also provided through e-mail, phone, and personal contact as needed.
